Strategies to answer the TOEFL listening
TOEFL iBT Listening section delivered immediately after the Reading.
Listening section of TOEFL iBT measures your ability to understand spoken
English in academic settings. In the TOEFL iBT listening conducted for three
main purposes:
1. Listening for basic comprehension.
2. Listening for pragmatic understanding.
3. To connect and combine the ideas presented in multiple information sources.
Each part of the Listening section (2 or 3 parts) consists of a long conversation and two lectures. The test taker hear each lecture or conversation only once. Lectures and conversations is 3-5 minutes. During the listening time is not running. The time allotted 10 minutes for each section is only to answer questions.
Preparation Strategy
Listen to spoken English from as many sources as possible. Listening to spoken English and British film spoken TV channels, listen to the radio and listen as much as you might find other sources. It would be better if you are part of academic or close to what's on the iBT TOEFL. The more you practice listening, listeners better you will become.
Listen to the main idea. It is usually found in the early part of the listening, while the details are scattered throughout the college. The main ideas will provide an understanding of what the conversation / lecture is about. Then you can listen to the details.
Learning to discover how the ideas presented in the listening. Some relationships between the main ideas including cause / effect, compare / contrast, and steps in the process.
Learn to listen to the signal words that show different parts of the piece - introduction, main steps, examples, conclusion, etc.
Build your vocabulary. While listening, try to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words from context. It is very important because there is a great opportunity to find the words you do not know the real test. Then, you have to guess its meaning. Write down every word that you do not know and put it in your wordlist. Try to memorize and use in speaking and writing. Flashcards can be a great way to improve your vocabulary.
Listen to the conversation or lecture with various accents. In the TOEFL iBT Listening section there are different accents and pronunciations. For this reason, you must practice listening to people with different accents and speech patterns.
